The D station of Basic Type Thick Turret Tooling is a heavy-capacity tooling assembly designed for large-scale punching, with a maximum diameter of 3.500" (88.9mm). In the "Original" or "Standard" configuration, it is a massive, fully guided unit that emphasizes structural stability over the bells and whistles of modern adjustable systems.
Key Features
1. Structural Composition
The Original D Station is characterized by its weight and the "Long Tool" design. Its primary components include:
*The Punch Driver (Head): A large-diameter steel cap that receives the impact from the machine's hammer. In the Original style, this is a solid interface that does not rotate for adjustment.
*Disc Spring Stack: Due to the large surface area of a 3.5" punch, the "stripping force" required to pull the tool out of the metal is immense. The D station uses a robust stack of Belleville disc washers rather than coil springs to provide high-tonnage pressure.
*Full-Length Guide Body: The guide is a precision-machined cylinder that houses the punch. Its length ensures that even if the punch is hitting off-center, the tool does not tilt or "cock" inside the turret, protecting the station's alignment.
2. Manual Length Compensation
Because the "Original" type lacks a "click-adjust" head, maintaining the tool length after sharpening is a manual process:
*Shimming the Tail: When the punch tip is reground, the operator must disassemble the unit and place large-diameter punch shims (usually 0.5mm to 2.0mm) between the punch body and the driver.
*Fixed Penetration: Without shims, a reground punch will not reach the die, resulting in a "half-cut" or a jammed sheet. The solid shim-stack ensures that the punching energy is transferred directly without the "play" sometimes found in threaded adjustment systems.
3. Keying and Positioning
*External Orientation: The guide body features a standard keyway (typically at 0°) to align it within the turret.
*Internal Orientation: For shaped punches (like a 2" x 3" rectangle), the punch body itself is keyed to the guide. In Original D stations, this is often a fixed-key setup, meaning the tool is dedicated to one specific angle relative to the turret.
