The TRUMPF Lance and Form Tooling is a class of specialized, two-component apparatus designed to execute a sequential action of both partial cutting (lancing) and subsequent geometric shaping (forming) within a single strike, without ejecting a slug.
Feature:
Segmented Action Geometry: This tooling employs a punch and die arrangement where the punch contains both a sharp shearing edge and a nearby smooth forming surface. The descent of the punch is meticulously controlled to ensure the shearing action is incomplete—it slits or severs the material along a pre-defined path—while leaving the material tethered to the main sheet body.
Contiguous Displacement: Immediately following the slit, the forming portion of the punch engages the partially severed material, urging it to undergo plastic deformation and displace into the negative cavity of the die. This controlled displacement creates the final, complex three-dimensional feature (e.g., a hook, a bridge, a tab).
Active Retention System: Due to the complex nature of holding the sheet during a combined cut and stretch, the die often incorporates a highly rigid stripper plate mechanism that delivers intense, localized pressure to prevent the sheet from lifting or wrinkling around the newly formed feature.
Defined Stop-Plunge: The tooling relies on a precise ram depth setting (the plunging dimension) to control the exact degree of the lance and the final height/angle of the form. The integrity of the final feature is directly proportional to the accuracy of this depth setting.
Application:
Lance and Form tooling is primarily utilized for creating integrated structural and functional hardware directly within the sheet metal component.
Internal Fastener Integration: Its chief application is manufacturing retention tabs, locking hooks, or snap-fit mechanisms. These formed features allow for the immediate, tool-less assembly and securing of mating components (such as circuit boards, internal covers, or cable bundles), completely obviating the need for loose, external hardware like nuts, screws, or clips.
Component Location: It generates rigid, positive stops or guides (like miniature bridges or flanges) that provide highly accurate datum points for secondary operations or for the reliable seating and positioning of other parts within an enclosure.
Sheet Bridging and Separation: The tooling can be used to create small access panels or flaps that are partially cut and formed to create a hinged opening or a fixed vent, ensuring the material remains integral to the sheet for security or environmental reasons.
